Neurotransmitter Testing in Mount Pleasant, SC

Neurotransmitter Testing

Neurotransmitter testing is a method used to analyze the levels of various neurotransmitters in the body. Neurotransmitters are chemicals released by neurons that act as chemical messengers between cells and affect how our bodies function. Testing can help diagnose conditions related to neurotransmitter imbalances or deficiencies, such as depression, anxiety, insomnia, attention deficit disorder (ADD), autism, and more.

What is tested for?

Neurotransmitter testing provides a snapshot of the levels of neurotransmitters in the body at one given point in time. It tests for:

• Dopamine

• Serotonin

• Norepinephrine

• GABA

• Epinephrine

• Histamine

• Metabolites that indicate neurotransmitter activity in urine samples.

Neurotransmitter levels can provide insight into how these chemical messengers are functioning and can be used to diagnose a wide range of mental health issues.

Testing Procedure

The most common method for testing neurotransmitters is through a urine sample, which is analyzed in a lab. Urine tests measure the levels of metabolites that indicate what neurotransmitter activity has been taking place in your body. Other methods for testing include saliva, hair, and blood samples.

Once the neurotransmitter levels have been tested, they can be used to help diagnose mental health issues and to guide treatment. For example, if a person's serotonin levels are low, their doctor may recommend an SSRI (selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor) antidepressant or a supplement that increases serotonin production in the body. If dopamine levels are too high or too low, physicians may recommend supplements that can help balance out the neurotransmitter levels in the body.

What can testing help?

Neurotransmitter imbalances can cause a variety of cognitive and physical issues, and testing can provide a screenshot of information so we can treat conditions including (but not limited to):

• Anxiety

• Depression

• Insomnia

• Fatigue

• Memory Impairment

• Weight Problems

• Chronic Pain/Fibromyalgia

• Migraine Headaches
